A private company could be asked to run a huge database containing details of all telephone calls, emails and internet use, it has been reported.

The option to tender out the management of the database will be included in a consultation paper to be published next month, according to the Guardian.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said access to such data was key to fighting terrorism but with proper safeguards.

Critics have said the idea poses a serious threat to civil liberties.

Russia shuts off gas to Ukraine

Much of the EU's gas from Russia arrives via Ukraine

Russia has stopped all gas supplies to Ukraine after the collapse of talks to end a row over unpaid bills and prices.

This happened a couple of years ago and we all had to pay more for our energy.

I really hope that the same thing doesn't happen this time.

Assurances from Vladimir Putin don't go down well here.

The British government is pressing European countries to help resettle inmates from Guantanamo Bay detention centre, the Foreign Office has said.

I am, quite frankly, appalled by this.

This is a problem entirely of the USA's making.
They should sort it out themselves and not expect the rest of the world to do it for them??

What is even worse is that Britain seems to be accepting the situation and urging other countries to help.

Enough, Gordon Brown.

I don't want any of the prisoners to be re-prisoned in the IK.
